Now that I am printing things which look mostly like they should I am printing various test (and printer torture) models from the web. One is 3dBenchy (the little boat). I get a nasty slot across the bow of the boat. (The blue boat is missing the roof because I ran out of filament when printing.) I had this failure on each attempt to print 3DBenchy. I was changing parameters in slic3r without a good idea what should be changed. I sliced with slic3r and printed either through pronterface I noticed that the image pictured in pronterface has the slot, the image in slic3r does not. What am I doing wrong?

I learned that a model may be non-Manifold and need repair. Even a popular model downloaded from the internet

I learned that a model may be non-Manifold and need repair. Even a popular model downloaded from the internet Yeah it happens, also depending on which slicer you are using will change your results. Many slicing softwares have minimal built in mesh repair, so if the OP uses a different slicer than you they may not see any issues with the model while you do. It's a good idea to run any problematic models through netfabb just to make sure they're manifold and don't have inverted meshes.
