Is it possible to print out the parts using PLA, or should they all be ABS?

Parts are printed in PLA normally so that's fine, but ABS would likely be a bit better for added strength, the only issue being the shrinkage of the parts may mess with tolerances.

I'm so glad I can use PLA because I don't have a printer that prints in ABS yet (it probably can, but I don't want to risk it). My friends and I are looking forward to building our printers once all of the materials come in! Btw, great videos, and instructions.
